August Garden Wedding at Rouge Restaurant | Calgary Wedding Photographer

There is something so effortlessly romantic about an August wedding in Calgary, and this wedding at Rouge was basically the perfect example of it.

Tucked into the heart of Inglewood, Rouge is one of those Calgary wedding venues that already has so much character that it doesn’t need much added to make it feel special. The restaurant is located inside the historic A.E. Cross House, a Victorian farmhouse built in 1891, surrounded by mature trees and an expansive garden that feels surprisingly removed from the city.

For an August wedding, the setting is especially beautiful. Everything is lush and green, the garden is at its fullest, and the property has that relaxed, European garden-party feeling that photographs so beautifully.

This wedding leaned into that atmosphere perfectly.

The bride wore an incredibly clean, modern off-the-shoulder gown paired with a long veil, slicked-back hair and pearl earrings. Against all of the greenery and historic details at Rouge, the simplicity of her look felt so elevated. The groom kept things equally timeless in a classic black tuxedo, creating that black-and-white contrast I will probably never get tired of photographing.

The entire day had this understated, editorial feeling without ever feeling overly styled.

A Romantic Garden Wedding in Calgary

One of my favourite things about photographing weddings at Rouge is the variety within one property. The gardens create a beautiful natural setting for portraits and outdoor celebrations, while the historic interiors give you something completely different photographically.

Rouge’s garden spans several city lots and includes mature landscaping, flowers and an edible garden used by the restaurant. During the warmer months, couples can also use the garden and covered patio for their wedding celebrations.

For this wedding, that meant moving between soft outdoor light, greenery, intimate indoor moments and the moodier corners of the historic house.

Some of my favourite photographs from the entire day were actually the simplest ones: the bride sitting quietly by the window before everything began, the flower girls gathered together inside, hands and rings against the clean lines of her gown, and the little in-between moments happening around the garden.

Those are always the photographs I find myself coming back to.

Editorial Wedding Photography That Still Feels Like You

My approach to wedding photography is always a mix of editorial imagery and honest documentation.

I love creating the photographs that feel intentional enough to belong in a magazine, but I never want a wedding gallery to feel like an eight-hour photoshoot.

This day was such a good example of that balance.

There are polished bridal portraits and classic photographs of the couple alongside blurry movement, guests laughing, flower girls running through the grass, champagne on the tables and all of the tiny interactions that actually make a wedding feel like a wedding.

The black-and-white photographs added another layer of nostalgia to the gallery, while the colour photographs kept the warmth of the August sun, deep greens of the garden, soft florals and little pops of red throughout the historic house.

The result feels romantic and timeless, but still a little bit cool.

Which, selfishly, is exactly where I like to live photographically.

Why Rouge Is Such a Beautiful Calgary Wedding Venue

For couples looking for a wedding venue in Calgary that feels intimate without sacrificing atmosphere, Rouge is such a unique option.

You get the convenience of having your wedding within the city while being surrounded by gardens, mature trees and a historic property that feels completely different from a traditional ballroom.

The venue offers several different wedding spaces, including the entire farmhouse, garden and seasonal patio. Rouge lists capacity for up to 110 guests with a whole-house booking and up to 116 guests for its garden and patio setup, making it particularly well suited to intimate and mid-sized Calgary weddings.

There are also so many different places to photograph without needing to leave the venue.

As a Calgary wedding photographer, that is something I really appreciate. Instead of disappearing for hours for portraits, couples can stay present with their guests while we use the house, garden, trees and surrounding Inglewood area to create a gallery with plenty of variety.

And from a photography perspective, Rouge really does have the good stuff: texture, history, beautiful window light, greenery, interesting interiors and outdoor space.

An August Wedding in Inglewood

August is one of my favourite months for weddings in Calgary because of evenings like this.

The gardens are full, everything is green and you get that warm late-summer light that makes outdoor cocktail hours and dinner feel extra dreamy.

For this wedding, simple white linens, delicate florals and candlelight allowed the setting to do most of the work. Nothing felt overdone. Instead, the entire celebration had this intimate dinner-party quality that worked so beautifully with Rouge.

It felt elegant without being formal for the sake of being formal.

Romantic without being overly traditional.

Editorial without losing any of the real moments.

Basically, my favourite combination.
