A SUMMER WEDDING AT ONE OF CALGARY’S MOST UNIQUE WEDDING VENUES
A SUMMER WEDDING AT ONE OF CALGARY’S MOST UNIQUE WEDDING VENUES
Every once in a while, I photograph a wedding somewhere that immediately makes its way onto my list of venues I cannot wait to come back to.
Bearspaw Golf Club officially did that.
As a Calgary wedding photographer, I’ve photographed weddings in just about every kind of setting our city and the surrounding area has to offer. There are beautiful downtown hotels, modern spaces, rustic venues, private properties and, of course, plenty of golf courses.
But Bearspaw genuinely surprised me.
There is something about this venue that feels completely different from what you typically picture when you hear “Calgary golf course wedding.” The architecture is striking enough to become part of the photographs themselves, while the greenery and open landscape give you that unmistakably Alberta feeling.
It feels elevated without being overly formal, rustic without feeling country and modern without losing any warmth.
And from a photography perspective, I was obsessed almost immediately.
BEARSPAW GOLF CLUB WEDDINGS
Located just northwest of Calgary, Bearspaw Golf Club feels surprisingly removed from the city while still being incredibly accessible.
The property combines rolling green space and views toward the Rockies with a clubhouse filled with warm wood, stone, glass and huge architectural lines.
It’s that combination that makes Bearspaw feel so unique among Calgary wedding venues.
There are plenty of venues where the surrounding landscape is beautiful. There are also venues where the building itself is beautiful.
It is much harder to find somewhere that gives you both.
At Bearspaw, the clubhouse isn’t something I’m trying to strategically keep out of the background of wedding portraits.
I actively want it in them.
WHEN THE VENUE BECOMES PART OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
This was probably what made me fall in love with Bearspaw the most.
The building is an incredible backdrop.
The enormous dark wood exterior creates so much contrast against a white wedding dress. The peaked rooflines give wider photographs beautiful symmetry and scale. The stone, glass and landscaping bring in texture without making anything feel busy.
Instead of every portrait needing to face toward the golf course, suddenly the architecture itself becomes another location.
Some of my favourite photographs from this wedding are actually the ones where I stepped way back.
Rather than filling the entire frame with the couple, I could let the scale of the clubhouse take over and allow them to become a smaller part of the composition.
Those photographs feel less like portraits that could have been taken anywhere and more like photographs that belong specifically to this wedding.
That sense of place is something I’m always looking for.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF CALGARY WEDDING VENUE
Calgary has no shortage of beautiful wedding venues, but Bearspaw fills a space I think is particularly interesting.
There is a style of venue that couples often start looking outside the city to find. Something architectural and design-forward, but still connected to the surrounding landscape.
Venues like The Paseo in Arizona have become so recognizable partly because the architecture and landscape work together. The venue doesn’t feel like a building that was simply dropped into a pretty location. The entire setting has an identity.
Bearspaw gave me a little bit of that same feeling, but in a way that feels completely appropriate for Alberta.
Dark timber. Oversized rooflines. Stone. Glass. Open landscape. Huge skies. Greenery.
It feels a little like a contemporary Western lodge, but without becoming themed or overly rustic.
And that makes it such an interesting option for couples who want something outside of the traditional ballroom, barn or mountain wedding venue.
A SUMMER WEDDING AT BEARSPAW GOLF CLUB
Summer was especially beautiful here.
Everything surrounding the clubhouse was incredibly green, which made the darker architecture stand out even more.
The simplicity of this wedding worked so beautifully against it.
A timeless white wedding dress, black suits, soft neutral florals and bridesmaids in deep green felt completely at home in the space without trying to match it too literally.
Nothing needed to compete with the surroundings.
Instead, the venue became part of the palette.
That is one of my favourite things about photographing weddings somewhere with this much character. You don’t need to manufacture an entire aesthetic around the space.
You can let it exist in the background and allow the people to remain the focus.
SO MANY PORTRAIT OPTIONS WITHOUT LEAVING THE PROPERTY
One of the first things I notice when photographing a new Calgary wedding venue is how much variety I can create without pulling the couple away from their wedding for an hour.
Bearspaw gives you so much to work with.
We could photograph against the clubhouse and create something clean and architectural, then move into the greenery for something softer.
There are pathways, gardens, mature trees, open areas of the golf course and views across the surrounding landscape.
Within a relatively small area, the photographs can go from polished and editorial to romantic and completely candid.
That variety matters to me because I never want a wedding gallery to feel like one long portrait session.
The beautiful portraits are part of the story.
But so are the people.
THE INSIDE IS JUST AS GOOD
And then you walk inside.
This is another reason Bearspaw stands apart from so many golf course wedding venues.
The reception space actually continues the visual identity of the exterior.
Huge windows bring the landscape into the room, while exposed timber overhead, high ceilings and oversized circular chandeliers give the space warmth and scale.
It photographs beautifully during the day, but it also has enough character that it still feels interesting once the sun goes down and the reception takes over.
That might sound like a very photographer-specific thing to care about.
It absolutely is.
But it makes a huge difference in the final wedding gallery.
I want the reception photographs to feel like they belong to the same story as everything that happened outside. Here, they do.
A VENUE THAT DOESN’T NEED TO BE TRANSFORMED
Some wedding venues are essentially blank canvases.
That can be amazing if you want to completely transform a room, but it also means a lot of the visual impact has to come from florals, rentals, draping and decor.
Bearspaw already has a point of view.
The wood, windows, high ceilings, surrounding greenery and architecture give you a beautiful foundation before anything else is brought in.
You can absolutely add incredible florals and make the space your own, but you aren’t starting with an empty box.
For couples who care about design but don’t necessarily want to build an entire venue from the ground up for one day, I think that has so much value.
WHY BEARSPAW GOLF CLUB IS NOW ONE OF MY FAVOURITE CALGARY WEDDING VENUES
My favourite venues to photograph aren’t necessarily the biggest or the fanciest.
They’re the ones that give me possibilities.
Interesting architecture. Beautiful natural light. Texture. Greenery. Space to move. Different environments within the same property. Somewhere that still photographs beautifully if Alberta weather suddenly decides not to cooperate.
And, maybe most importantly, somewhere with an identity of its own.
Bearspaw has that.
You can look through these photographs and actually feel where the wedding happened.
The dark timber clubhouse keeps appearing in the background. The gardens soften the architecture. The golf course opens everything back up. The huge windows bring the landscape inside once everyone moves into the reception.
The venue becomes a subtle thread running through the entire gallery.
That’s what made Bearspaw such a refreshing venue for me to photograph.
BEARSPAW GOLF CLUB WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
If you’re searching for a Calgary wedding venue and love the idea of being surrounded by greenery and Alberta landscape but still want interesting architecture and a more elevated setting, Bearspaw Golf Club deserves a spot on your list.
It doesn’t feel like a traditional golf course wedding venue.
And I think that’s exactly why I loved it so much.
It gives you the convenience of getting married close to Calgary while creating the feeling that you’ve actually escaped the city for the day.
For me, it has officially become one of those venues I’m already hoping appears in my inbox again.
And if you’re currently planning a Bearspaw Golf Club wedding, please consider this my very enthusiastic request to bring me back.
